Epoxy Coatings                                                        Top =

Today, garages have graduated from simple storage areas, becoming organized shops or showrooms. Every bit of attention that a homeowner pays to decorating the home is also paid to the garage...right down to what goes on the cement floors.

Garage floor coverings have the versatility to go with any style of décor. Looks can range from simple gray concrete with a sealer to a more complex color base with multicolor flakes in it, offering a design similar to granite or terrazzo. Acrylic flakes come in a wide selection of colors, offering an almost endless choice of combinations. This system provides an excellent wearing surface that is chemical and stain resistant, and can stand up to vehicle traffic.

Quartz coatings are multicolored aggregates 1/32" in diameter, spread onto the surface of 100% solid epoxy to create a brilliant and varied surface. Quartz coatings have the impact resistance not normally found with the acrylic paint flakes.

Both flakes and quartz additives add traction as well as design appeal. If more traction is required, we have additives and techniques to achieve this.

Choosing the design for your garage floor system can be as simple as matching the color of your house or as involved as hiding any imperfections or flaws in the existing floor. Coating the existing concrete with only a sealer, will allow imperfections to show through.  A colored base with the acrylic flakes or quartz aggregate would cover most any imperfections that may exist.  We have thousands of color combinations available for you!

It is important to remember that the most important part of applying epoxy flooring is the preparation. Using a dust-free mechanical floor grinder is the best method for preparing the surface and opening the pores of the concrete. This makes it ready to bond with the new finish. In some cases, the use of a commercial-grade pressure washer, using organic or environmentally friendly detergents, can be effective.

Concrete Sealing (Colored & Clear)                                          Top =

If a more cost effective, solid color look is what you’re after, then sealing the concrete with a colored sealer (stain) is the answer!  Here are some reasons why this is a good choice:

  • Acrylic-Silicone based pigmented sealer
  • Penetrates deeply into any cementitous surface
  • Blocks the penetration of dirt, oil, grease, chemicals, and stains, making the concrete easier to clean and maintain
  • Inhibits dusting of the surface
  • Seals out water and chlorides, which minimizes freeze-thaw damage
  • Protects the concrete surface from abrasion and wear
  • Skid Guard can be added to sealer to reduce slipping
  • Apply on bare, stamped concrete, spray deck, kool deck, texture deck, brick pavers or any other concrete surface
  • Dry to touch in approx. 60 minutes, 24-hours foot traffic, 48-hours vehicle traffic

Acid Stain                                                            Top =

Because of concrete’s porous qualities and neutral tone, it is the perfect blank canvas for topically applied color.  Using acid-based chemical stains, Artistic Concrete Finishes is able to achieve rich, earth-toned color schemes resembling natural stone, marble, wood, or even leather, giving a completely custom look to any concrete surface.

Acid stains work by penetrating the surface and reacting chemically with the hydrated lime in the concrete.  The acid in the stain lightly etches the surface, allowing the metallic salts to penetrate more easily.  Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and won’t fade, chip off, or peel away.  Like stains for wood, acid-based stains are translucent and the color they produce will vary depending on the color and condition of the concrete they are applied to.  Each concrete slab will accept the stain in varying degrees of intensity, creating natural color variations that bring character and distinction to each project.  The naturally occurring variegations and marbling, any blemishes and imperfections in your concrete simply adds charm.  Acid stains can create an array of subtle earth tones, such as tans, browns, terra cottas, and soft blue-greens.

We also offer water-based stains that greatly expand our color palette with colors ranging from soft pastels to vivid reds, oranges, yellows, and purples.

Dry Polished Concrete                                        Top =

Polished concrete is a process which enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete to create a glossy finish.  A mechanical grinding & polishing process that utilizes industrial diamonds & impregnating hardeners and sealers to level, densify, polish & finally seal the floor from within the interior of the floor surface.

Concrete slabs have an inherent natural beauty, but until recently, residential and retail facilities preferred floor coverings, such as vinyl composite tile, decorative tile or terrazzo, to make up for the perceived lack luster of concrete’s natural state. However, the benefits of natural concrete, such as cost savings and high-traffic durability, have long been a familiar solution for industrial sites, grocery stores, home improvement warehouses and convention centers.

Sheen Level/Finish Options

Level 1: Matte Finish:  100 grit

Level 2: Low Sheen:   400 grit

Level 3: High Sheen:  800 grit

Level 4: Gloss Shine:  3000 grit

Benefits of Polished Concrete

·         Elimination of Dusting from Efflorescence
In ordinary unpolished concrete, tiny particles of dust are pushed to the surface through an upward force called hydrostatic pressure, resulting in efflorescence. Efflorescence leads to dusting, which can make maintenance a costly priority.

·         Stain-Resistant
By densifying and sealing the surface, polished concrete transforms a porous concrete floor into a tightened floor that is dense enough to repel water, oil, and other contaminants, preventing them from penetrating the surface.

·         Improved Reflectivity and Ambient Lighting
The reflective properties of a polished concrete floor increases the lighting in facilities. Increased ambient lighting will reduce the energy bill as well as look beautiful.

·         Increased Slip Resistance
Polished concrete, though quite shiny, does not create a slippery floor. In fact, the benefits of mechanically grinding and flattening the floor will increase the coefficient of friction when compared to ordinary concrete. Polished concrete often exceeds OSHA standards for floors. (ASTM C 1028)

·         Less Maintenance
Most floor systems, including tile and linoleum, require aggressive scrubbing to maintain a clean environment and nice appearance.  Polished concrete surfaces are tightly compacted, reducing stains, and do not require any waxing or stripping to maintain the sheen.

·         Cost-Effective
Polished concrete will reduce energy and maintenance costs significantly through reflectivity and ambient lighting, reduction in upkeep (such as waxing), and reduced tire wear.

·         LEEDs Friendly
Polished concrete not only utilizes existing concrete surfaces, eliminating additional materials such as coverings/coatings and moving towards sustainable building, it typically contains no noticeable VOC’s, making it friendly for any USBG LEEDS project.

·         Improved condition for old floors
As concrete ages, surface stress, delamination, curled cold joints, and other problems can arise. Mechanically grinding the floor will remove the top surface of the old concrete and polishing will then strengthen it, increasing its impact and abrasion resistance.

·         Reduced Tire Wear
The rough, uneven texture of natural concrete causes tires to abrade, adding to their wear. A polished concrete floor system will level the joints and make the entire surface smooth, preventing this abrasion.

·         No Production/Plant Shutdowns
Dry-Mechanically polished concrete can be put into service immediately after the process is complete. Due to the cleanliness of the process and the lack of toxic or hazardous chemicals, floors can often be serviced while the plant is in full production.
